Mine are nine feet tall and have been blooming for several weeks, but I’m hearing reports that other Lion’s Ears (Leonotis nepetifolia) are not behaving as well under apparently identical conditions (full sun, well-watered, some fertilizer.) How are yours doing?

My lion’s ear looked exactly like yours! I gave some to my Mother and hers were similiar to yours and mine! So - I think that they did not live up to the written expectations. However, they were wonderfully interesting and they were conversation starters for some of our summer parties! The flowers looked nothing like Lion’s ears…
So glad you enjoyed your giant prickly flowers! We are looking into getting a different species for this year, Leonotis leonurus, which I grew two years ago and found to have better and earlier flowers and maybe less foliage. I don’t know why the common name is Lion’s Ear — its other common name is Lion’s Tail, which is strange, too!
