Some common names for bidens are beggarticks, bur marigolds, cobbler's pegs, Spanish needles, stickseeds, and tickseeds. Both the common names and the Latin genus name (“two tooth”) refer to the double-barbed seeds, which this variety does not produce. There are Minnesota native bidens with non-showy flowers that make the annoying burs.
