About Venosa violacea
Purple-veined white star sits on top of deep purple petals in outfacing 4–5" flowers. Blooms profusely July–September for that sought-after early fall color. Introduced in 1884 in France. Group 3.
We currently have not noted a species for this Clematis. At an International Clematis Society annual meeting in 2004, in a contest to ID various Clematis, members struggled to identify this plant. It is considered to be a C. viticella hybrid, but has many of the characteristics of C. florida.
About Clematis
Showy flowers in a range of colors and shapes. Best in full sun (unless noted otherwise), with roots protected from the hottest midday rays. Climbs by twining leaves that must grab something less than a half-inch in diameter. All clematis are toxic to people and pets. Deer- and rabbit-resistant. Great scrambling through shrubs or other supports, or even as a ground cover. Here's a note on pruning groups.
