About Prickly Pear, Burbank's Spineless

A nearly spineless, shrubby cactus with branches bearing many thick, oblong bluish green 12" pads. Orange-yellow 4" flowers in spring and early summer at the tips of the pads, followed by edible, pear-shaped fleshy reddish purple fruits (called tunas) whose taste has been likened to watermelon. The pads are cooked and eaten as well.
