Greenish silver flower heads change color to resemble 1–3" bristly purple pinecones or pineapples, each surrounded and crowned by jagged purple bracts. Native as near as Wisconsin.

From the parsley and carrot family, sea hollies are not related to the hollies or thistles they somewhat resemble. They look great with small ornamental grasses and with yellow flowers.

Offbeat, fanciful plants seem to be from an alien planet. Stiff, branching stems with prickly leaves. Color on the cones and spiny bracts remains when cut or dried. Best in hot, full sun and actually likes poor, dryish soil. Drought-tolerant and deer-resistant. Blooms July–September. See more in Perennials and Rattlesnake Master in the Native Perennials.
