Roots used by ancient Egyptians, Greeks, and Romans for bright red textile dye. In its native Mediterranean region, madder is a perennial, but in Minnesota it needs to be grown in large pots to be brought indoors during the winter. Roots should have at least three years to grow to pencil-thickness before harvesting.
