Vertical stems in a dense clump. Known for its three-pronged "turkey-foot" seed heads in late summer. From the prairie and savanna, it's drought-tolerant, reliably perennial, and adaptable. Host plant for the caterpillars of arogos skipper, dusted skipper, and Delaware skipper butterflies. Best in lean soil. Emerges in late spring.
