Dense shrub that can be shaped into a small tree. Deep red 4” waterlily-shaped flowers all summer, and yellow leaves in the fall. Blooms on old and new wood. Hybrid of the West Coast C. occidentalis and an Asian species. Very deer-resistant.

Large glossy leaves. All parts of the plant are fragrant, smelling of pineapple, apple, and bubblegum, although fragrance varies from year to year. Also called Carolina allspice.
