Ornamental shade tree with yellow fall color and mustard yellow buds in winter. Non-showy green flowers in April and May, with separate fruiting and pollenizing flowers on the same plant. Seed from southeast Minnesota.

Nuts in September can be pressed for excellent oil, but are mostly unpalatable. Two trees improve nut production. Long taproot, prefers moist soil. Larval host to large moths: luna, regal, and funerary dagger.
