The vestal virgins were a sacred group of six women and girls in ancient Rome who were charged with maintaining the eternal flame of Vesta, the goddess of the hearth. They were chosen from noble families between the ages of six and ten, and served for thirty years, during which time they took a vow of chastity. Their name has come to represent chastity and purity.
