About Carmine Jewel

Fruits remain on the branches past the ripe stage, mid-July to mid-August. The North Star cherry is one of its parents. First release of the University of Saskatchewan’s fruit breeding program.

In 1985, Dr. Cecil Stushnoff and Rick Sawatsky began making crosses with the high quality, cold tolerant cultivar (Zone 4a) ‘North Star’ from Minnesota. These crosses...resulted in the release of the variety ‘SK Carmine Jewel’ in 1999. P. immense (P. fruticosa x P. cerasus).
