About Oikos' Hungarian

This tree says “Hello, spring” by covering its branches with clusters of small yellow flowers. Leaves follow, and then midsummer bright red cherries. Sour fruit can be eaten fresh, like a blend of sour cherry and cranberry, but it’s best used in jams and sauces. Slow grower with arching branches. Can be pruned to a single trunk.

The species name, "mas," comes from the Latin word for male because sometimes the tree doesn’t produce fruit for several years even though it is blooming. Cornelian cherry dogwood wood is extremely dense (it doesn’t even float) and has been used since ancient times for various tools and weapons.

About Cornelian Cherry

Multi-stemmed tree related to dogwoods. Tolerates heavy clay soil. Not self-fruitful, so plant at least two trees. The fruit ripens after it falls from the tree.
